전에 도쿄의 상업 지구였던 곳에 위치한 이 프로젝트는 클라이언트가 나서 자란 지역에 재건축을 하는 것이었다.리조트의 분위기가 나는 주거지로 Lik House가 탄생하게 되었는데, 이는 긴장을 완화시켜주고 단독주택 주변에 흩어진 중간 높이의 집단 주택으로 인해 친근감을 준다. Lik House는 새로운 주거지와 주변의 주거지 사이에 균형있는 건축디자인을 추구하고 있는, 도쿄 시내에서 비교적 조용한 동네에 건축되었다. 따라서 여기서는 건축물의 부피는 문제가 되지 않는다. 대신, 터널 같은 3개의 건물이 안뜰과 대나무 밭으로 변형되는 불규칙한 야외 주거공간을 만들어내면서 각진 궤도의 부지 경계를 따라 배치되었다.

각 건물은 150㎜ 두께의 관형 콘크리트 구조로 되어 있고 안뜰을 향한 면이 유리로 되어 있어서 내외부의 경계는 모호하게 이어진다. 바닥에서 천장까지 나 있는 리본 윈도우는 대나무 정원과 초목의 경관을 방안에까지 끌어들이면서 각 실내공간의 경계가 되어준다. 풍부한 자연광은 물론 리본 윈도우, 안뜰, 대나무 밭은 눈에 띄게 좁은 실내에도 불구하고 계속되는 빛과 그림자의 유희를 끌어들이는 것처럼 개방감과 투명성으로 이 건물의 구성을 넓고 균형이 잘 잡히고 깔끔해 보이게 한다. 더구나 한 공간에서 다른 공간으로 이동하는 사람은 역동적인 건축, 가느다란 통로, 연속되는 공간(이쪽 끝에서 저쪽 끝까지의 길이는 50m이다) 등 전이공간을 가로지르는 듯한 느낌을 갖게 된다. 건축적 형태와 프로그램 외에 Lik House는 시멘트 매스와 화이트 스터코 표면과 강한 대조감을 보이고 있다. 엄격하게 기하학적인 각진 형태는 이 집을 엄격하게 현대적인 일본 주택으로 만들어준다. 리본 윈도우, 넓은 개방감, 천장의 채광창, 유리패널 등은 이 시멘트 매스에 우아함을 더해준다. 매우 강한 디자인요소는 의심할 여지없이 TV를 보거나 일을 하면서도 즐길 수 있는 대나무 밭이다. 절대적으로 미니멀한 일본의 현대주택에 맞는 분위기를 조성하듯, 이 집에는 가구가 거의 없다.

Located in a former business district in Tokyo, the project asked for a house to be rebuilt on a plot where the client was born and raised. The Lik House is a residence with the feeling of a resort which is both relaxed and offers a sense of intimacy due to the medium-rise collective housing scattered around the single-family house. The Lik House was constructed in a relatively calm neighborhood in the city of Tokyo where the architectural design sought for a balance between the new residence withthose that surrounded it. As a result, any bulky volume was immediately out of the question. Instead, three tunnel-like volumes were arranged along the site’s boundary with angled trajectories, generating an irregular outdoor residual space which was transformed into the courtyard and the bamboo yard.

Each volume is a tube-like concrete structure(150mm thick) with glazing facing the courtyard, so that the boundary between the inside and out might continue vaguely. Floor-to-ceiling ribbon windows border each of the internal spaces, introducing views of the bamboo garden and vegetation into the rooms. The ribbon windows, courtyard and bamboo yard as well as the abundant natural light make this building composition seem spacious, well-balanced and neat, with a sense of openness and transparency as it introduces a continuous play of light and shadows despite its remarkably narrow interior. Moreover, someone walking from one space to another feels as if crossing transitional areas; the dynamic architecture, the slender passages and the continuous space(50m end-to-end).

 Apart from the architectural form and program, the Lik House has a strong contrast as it plays with cement volumes and stark white stucco surfaces. Angular shapes, which are strictly geometric, make Lik House a strictly contemporary Japanese residence. Ribbon windows, wide openings, skylights, and glass panels add elegance to the cement volumes. Undoubtedly, a very strong design element is the bamboo yard which can be enjoyed as you’re watching TV or working. Few furniture pieces adorn the Lik House as they set the tone for an absolutely minimal Japanese modern residence.
